Why Do I Crave Sugar?

There are 2 different parts to your sugar cravings… First there is the emotional attachment to food and specifically sweet things. But secondly and perhaps most importantly for you there is the physical attachment to the sugar chemical.

Although it starts out as sugar cane, the final ‘refinement’ of sugar is not a real food. It’s been processed so much that it’s barely recognizable as originating from sugar cane. All the B vitamins and original minerals have been stripped from the sugar cane and sent into the blackstrap molasses by-product.

Once you eat sugar or foods high in sugar, the body reacts by saying, “Where are the B vitamins and minerals to help me digest this food?” When the body discovers that they are nowhere to be found, then it has to take some emergency measures and use up the B vitamins and minerals that have been stored. But that’s not all. Because of the acidity of sugar, your body has to counteract it fast. This is accomplished by taking minerals from your bones. That sugar you eat ends up stripping your bones of their vital minerals.

Sugar also gives you short bursts of serotonin in the brain. These short bursts make you feel calm and relaxed, contented with life. And that’s a good feeling, right?

When you ask the question in your mind, “Why do I crave sugar?” you may not realize what is happening in your body. Cravings have nothing to do with your will power although they do have to do with your eating habits. Once your blood sugar levels fall into the low blood sugar zone, the body sends you a message that you must eat and you must do it now. If you’ve been indulging in a high sugar diet, you’ll grab something sweet.

And that’s when your blood sugar level starts its roller coaster ride. Eating something sweet skyrockets the blood sugar. You feel the high of the sugar from the serotonin and then insulin comes into the picture, bringing that high blood sugar level down to normal. The problem is that insulin over responds and the blood sugar levels fall into the low blood sugar zone. And then you ask the same old question, “Why do I crave sugar?”

Low blood sugar is the culprit. Insulin is the culprit. Choosing sugar is the culprit. And the thoughts that go through your mind during the day are also the culprit.
